Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog ervaart de Borgerhoutse onderwijzer Willem De Meyer (1899 – 1983) het onrecht en het leed waarvan veel Vlamingen het slachto er zijn. Naar het voorbeeld van toondichter Peter Benoit en geïnspireerd door de zangfestivals in de Baltische staten wil hij via het lied het Vlaams bewustzijn van zijn volk aanwakkeren. Na de schooluren reist de jonge idealist gans Vlaanderen rond en propageert hij de samenzang. Deze zangstonden leggen de kiem voor een grote manifestatie: het eerste Vlaams Nationaal Zangfeest in 1933. Ook Willem De Meyer wordt niet gespaard door de repressie na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De eeuwige optimist wordt gebroodroofd en is dan voltijds de Vlaamse Bard met de onafscheidelijke accordeon. Hij treedt op in diverse kringen: culturele verenigingen, scholen, jeugdkampen, jeugdbewegingen, bejaardentehuizen, het Belgisch leger en de Vlaamse migranten in Noord-Amerika en Zuid-Afrika. In een periode van vijfenvijftig jaren verzorgt Willem De Meyer ongeveer veertienduizend optredens. Zijn samenwerking met toondichters en tekstschrijvers resulteert in honderden nieuwe liederen die hij tot in de verste uithoeken van Vlaanderen aanleert en populair maakt. Zijn grootvader Hendrik De Meyer (1837 – 1901) is een Geelse dagloner die als pauselijke zoeaaf de Italiaanse republikein Garibaldi bestrijdt. Zijn vader Frans-Jozef De Meyer (1876 – 1948) wordt hoofdinspecteur in het lager onderwijs en politicus. Van beiden erft hij het doorzettingsvermogen om ook in moeilijke omstandigheden zijn idealen te realiseren.
